Cost to redevelop Charlotte Transportation Center in uptown pegged at $89M

CHARLOTTE — Replacing the Charlotte Transportation Center as part of a larger development will cost $89 million, city government and transit executives disclosed Monday in a presentation.

Tracy Dodson, the assistant city manager in charge of economic development, and Charlotte Area Transit System CEO John Lewis provided an update to City Council’s Transportation, Planning & Development Committee this morning as part of an ongoing bid to transform uptown near the NBA arena. Council must approve the proposed public-private development before it can move forward.

The city received an unsolicited bid in 2019 from developers to buy and overhaul the 2.6-acre site — next to the arena — that houses the transportation center. That led to a competitive-bidding process; in August 2019, the city selected Charlotte firm White Point Partners and Dallas-based Dart Interests to develop a public-private project incorporating a new bus hub in combination with privately funded retail and offices, among other features.
