CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System is out $3.85 million after the county voted to block a portion of Sedgefield Middle School from being sold.

Residents in Dilworth and Sedgefield praised the vote.

Dozens packed the chamber Tuesday night asking the county to save the green space.

CMS wanted to sell 3.7 acres of land behind Sedgefield Middle School near Sedgefield Park to the Pulte Corporation for $3.85 million.

The Pulte Corporation wanted to turn the green space into no more than 30 townhomes.

Mecklenburg County commissioners voted to block the sale.

The county manager is now going to negotiate with CMS to take the property off the surplus list, which allowed the green space to be on the market in the first place.

If CMS won't take the land off the surplus list, the county manager is going to negotiate to purchase the land.

It's unclear how much that would cost, but the funding would come from the $33 million of advanced funding the county voted to provide CMS to expatiated school improvements.
