YORK, S.C. — In York County, emergency responders are relieved there wasn't a victim in a drowning call Saturday night.
Police said Steffani Chase and John Shefte called police saying they thought their friend had drowned in Lake Wylie.
Around 75 rescuers from more than a dozen agencies showed up to help. They say it turned out the supposed victim was safe in a cabin and his friends were drunk and confused.
"Their time was impacted, but they are all relieved that we do not have a victim and we do not have to find a family to go and tell they've lost a loved one," said Cotton Howell, director of York County Emergency Management.
Police charged Shefte with boating under the influence and Chase with public disorderly conduct.
