Police: Speed, drug use suspected in deadly south Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified the driver involved in a deadly crash in south Charlotte Monday night.

The wreck happened after 9:30 p.m. on West Tyvola Road between South Tryon Street and Spear Boulevard.

Police said 43-year-old Melvin Mullis III died after the car he was driving crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head-on.

The driver of the other car was hurt but is expected to be OK.

Authorities said drug use and excessive speed by Mullis are suspected factors in the crash.
