Faulty battery-powered leaf blower sparks University City house fire

CHARLOTTE — Four people are without a place to stay after a fire in University City heavily damaged their home early Friday morning.

Investigators determined it was caused by a malfunction in a battery-powered leaf blower.

Firefighters got the call to the two-story home on Haywain Court around 5:15 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters said heavy fire was showing from the front porch and extending into the attic.

Charlotte Fire said it took 30 firefighters a little over 30 minutes to put out the blaze.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

The fire caused an estimated $110,000 in damage.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.
