85-year-old charged after workplace dispute ends in deadly shooting

NEWTON, N.C. — The Newton Police Department says a 59‑year‑old man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon at the Old Hickory Tannery on Locust Street.

Officers arrived around 3:18 p.m. and found Robert Roger Arguelles of Taylorsville with gunshot wounds to the chest and back. Despite life‑saving efforts, he died at the scene.

Investigators said Arguelles and a co‑worker, 85‑year‑old Willard Gary Black of Hickory, were involved in an altercation before Black allegedly shot him.

Black was detained at the scene, and police recovered the weapon. He is charged with second‑degree murder and is scheduled for a first court appearance Thursday.
