Deputies: Caregivers used metal broom handle to beat man with disabilities

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Deputies have charged two caregivers accused of using a metal broom handle to beat a man with disabilities at a Lincoln County group home.

Detectives said 20-year-old Amaya Martin and 28-year-old Casandra Miller repeatedly beat a man with a metal broom handle Thursday when he wouldn't comply while getting off the group home's van.

Witnesses told investigators the women hit the victim several times, causing him to fall to his knees during the attack.

Deputies said the man was taken to the hospital with several welts and bruises all over his body, as well as a large scrape to his knee from the fall.

Both Martin and Miller have been charged with one felony count of assault of an individual with a disability and one misdemeanor count of assault with a deadly weapon. They are being held under a $10,000 bond.

Deputies said the women were immediately suspended from the group home, pending the investigation.

They are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Lincoln County.
