Deputies identify man who died after falling from Upper Catawba Falls

OLD FORT, N.C. — Authorities have identified the man who died Saturday after falling from Upper Catawba Falls in Old Fort.

Deputies with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office said Jimmy Schmidt Jr. of Georgia was part of a bachelor party group that went hiking in the area.

Friends said Schmidt was at the top of the falls and leaned over to get a better view when he lost his footing and fell.
