Deputies looking for grave robbers in Lincoln County

LINCOLNTON, N.C.,None — Lincoln County deputies are investigating a string of thefts from a local cemetery over the last two months.

According to deputies, thieves are stealing burial vaults, the container that holds the casket or remains at the time of burial, from Forest Lawn Cemetery on Highway 150 in Lincolnton.

Since Dec. 16, more than 50 vaults have been stolen, officials said. The most recent theft was discovered Wednesday and involved 10 burial vaults valued at $10,000.

Surveillance video from Feb. 21 shows two men, one white and one black, in the area where the vaults are stored.

The value of the four thefts is approximately $30,000, deputies said.

Anyone who has information about the theft or has seen any suspicious activity in the area of Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2858 E NC 150 Hwy is asked to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office at 704-732-9050 or Crime Stoppers at 704-736-8909.

Calls to Crime Stoppers can be anonymous and could earn up to a $1,000 reward.
