Driver arrested for DWI after pedestrian killed in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A 49-year-old pedestrian was killed Thursday evening after being struck by a vehicle in the 3600 block of Eastway Drive in East Charlotte, according to police.

Officers arrested the driver, 41-year-old Jacoa Stringfellow, for driving while impaired following the fatal collision.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers responded to the crash scene in the Eastway Division near East Independence Boulevard shortly after 7:26 p.m. Upon arrival, first responders found pedestrian Christopher Easterling in the roadway suffering from severe injuries. MEDIC pronounced Easterling dead at the scene.

Stringfellow remained at the scene following the crash in a Cadillac DTS that sustained damage to its front end.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Stringfellow was driving northbound on Eastway Drive when her Cadillac DTS struck Easterling.

Investigators said Easterling was crossing Eastway Drive outside of a marked crosswalk and was not wearing reflective clothing at the time of the collision.

Officers screened Stringfellow for impairment at the scene, determined she was impaired and charged her with driving while impaired. She was subsequently booked into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Multiple units responded to process the scene and gather physical evidence, including CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit, the department’s DWI Task Force, Crime Scene Search, MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department. Officers have notified Easterling’s next of kin.

Detectives with the CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit are continuing to investigate the crash.
