Driver killed while speeding past traffic on Monroe Road, police say

CHARLOTTE — A 44-year-old woman died after a crash Tuesday night on Monroe Road, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

CMPD says Sharon Michelle Cearley was driving a Nissan Altima when she crashed into a Chrysler Pacifica around 6:20 p.m.

It happened on Monroe Road near Covedale Drive. CMPD, Charlotte Fire Department, and MEDIC responders found both cars with significant damage.

Cearley was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she was later pronounced dead.

CMPD said early evidence indicates that Cearley was traveling on Monroe Road above the posted speed limit and passing other vehicles. She then crossed several lanes of traffic and drove into oncoming traffic before colliding with the Chrysler.

The people inside the Chrysler were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
