CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Duke Energy is burying power lines to try and keep customers' air conditioning and lights on no matter what happens.
Although it can be a great solution, burying the lines is more expensive compared to hanging the lines overhead, according to Duke Energy.

When Duke Energy does place power lines underground, they are meant to last with Duke’s "self-healing" technology. Duke Energy said it’s also using other self-healing systems citywide that will automatically reroute power in the event of an outage.
"When they all work together, it creates a layer of reliability that actually benefits everybody,” said Jeff Brooks, who works for Duke Energy.
