GREENSBORO, N.C. — John Edwards’ former aide took the stand Monday afternoon in the former vice presidential candidate’s campaign finance trial.
Andrew Young’s testimony wrapped up for the day, but he is expected to spend most of the day in front of the court Tuesday.
During testimony, he talked about his close relationship with Edwards, including their visit with a wealthy donor.
At the center of the trial is nearly $1 million that the prosecution said Edwards misused with the help of Young to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter.
Prosecutors said Edwards was trying to protect his image and his campaign. They also contend that Edwards masterminded the cover-up, using money from two wealthy donors.
Edwards’ defense team said he was hiding the affair from his wife and to avoid public humiliation.
In court, Edwards listened intently as Young testified about meeting with one of the donors, an elderly heiress named Rachel “Bunny” Mellon.
As they left, Young said, “she gave all of us a big hug and ended with, ‘I’m going to do everything I can to help you become president.’”
The defense argued that Young used most of the money from the two donors on his own personal expenses.
The prosecution admitted that Young is testifying against Edwards under a cooperation agreement with the hopes he can avoid prosecution.
It is unknown if Edwards will take the stand during the trial.
