Emergency crews respond to American Airlines hangar after person found unconscious

CHARLOTTE — A vendor was found unconscious inside a fuel tank at the American Airlines maintenance hangar at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Wednesday morning, officials said. Emergency responders were called around 11 a.m. after the individual experienced a medical issue during a routine repair.

Charlotte Fire said crews responded to the scene and the individual was safely removed from an aircraft.

The vendor was transported to Atrium CMC-Main for medical attention.

An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that a vendor had a medical issue while performing a routine repair, and a safety representative called EMS. The employee was later released from the hospital.

Police scanner traffic provided more specific details about the incident. A dispatcher relayed a call from an employee at the American-based hangar.

“We just got a call in from an employee at the American-based hangar,” the dispatcher said. “They are saying they have an employee unconscious inside a fuel tank next to the aircraft outside the hangar. Requesting medical assistance.”
