CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An external review of last year’s deadly shooting at the University of North Carolina Charlotte found the school did many things right the day of the shooting and in the days following.

The review focused on leadership, relationships, preparedness, crisis communication, threat assessment, mental health, resilience and recovery.
The university said it will make several changes including reviewing and revising its emergency operations plan, review and revise its crisis communications plan and research how it can strengthen its ability to identify, assess and manage campus threat-related concerns.
The report noted several areas of strength including the initial law enforcement response, actions taken to secure the campus, leadership’s preparations for ongoing campus needs and communication with the university community.

The person who oversaw the review process said UNC Charlotte did many things right, but they did make several recommendations.

Reed Parlier and Riley Howell both died in the shooting on April 30, 2019.
Four other students were hurt.
