ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — While many of the hulking former textile mills that remain in the Charlotte area have been turned into hip offices, luxury apartments and dining destinations, the region’s roots in that industry are still important to recruiting efforts.
The latest confirmation came Tuesday morning, with a press release from Gov. Roy Cooper’s office announcing that Fab-Con Machinery Development Corp. is bringing its global headquarters and a manufacturing operation to Salisbury.

“Fab-Con Machinery’s decision to create a home in Rowan County validates our reputation as the best state to do business,” Cooper says in the release. “When woven together, our state’s skilled workforce, quality of life, and textile supply chain create a foundation of success for global manufacturers like this.”
The company, whose current headquarters office is in Port Washington, New York, plans to invest $5.3 million to set up shop here. It expects to create 27 jobs, according to the release, with an average annual salary of $73,081 — far exceeding the county’s overall average wage of $48,360 per year.
