MORGANTON, N.C. — The life of a first responder who died serving his community is being honored with a local bridge named in his memory.

Drivers in Morganton will see a new sign over the Interstate 40 bridge on Enola Road, which has been renamed the Kelly Michael Kincaid Bridge.

Kincaid served in many different departments, including the Burke County Sheriff’s Office as a lieutenant and shift commander, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Police Department as a reserve police officer at Broughton Hospital and MDPS as a reserved firefighter.

He collapsed and died in 2006 while responding to a house fire.

Kincaid was honored during a ceremony Friday morning at the Morganton Department of Public Safety Station 3 in Morganton.

Kelly’s family attended the ceremony and was presented with a resolution in honor of Kincaid.

“He would be really honored, he really would,” said Linda Kincaid Belote, Kelly’s mother. “His grandfather was a volunteer fireman and his dad was a volunteer fireman and so he dreamed of it all his life.”
