CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nearly 50 people have been killed this year in Charlotte.

One of those victims, Domingo Venancio-Tapia, was shot to death outside a restaurant on South Boulevard earlier this month.

His family opened up about the impact his death is having on the community at a news conference Wednesday morning held by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

CMPD Chief Kerr Putney, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox and Community Relations Executive Director Willie Ratchford were also there to talk about how they plan to get to the root of the violence.

Together they're working to expand existing conflict resolution programs in CMS and in all corners of Charlotte from neighborhoods to churches. The goal is to teach people, young and old, how to listen, de-escalate and use words instead of violence.

As far as reaching more young people, CMPD also plans to do more outreach in schools by simply going to schools and interacting with students more. CMS is also in the process of training a gun-sniffing K-9 to be used during random screenings. That's set to be in place by next school year.
