CHARLOTTE — A family says it has been waiting more than 16 months for its condo to be fully restored after a massive sewage leak, even though the HOA’s insurance agreed to cover repairs.

Patricia Andrade says her condo building had a massive sewage leak last year.

“Disgusting,” she told Action 9 attorney Jason Stoogenke. “It was bad. Very bad. It damaged the whole floor. Damaged the whole walls. My personal stuff.”

She got an estimate to restore her home to the way it was before: More than $50,000. The HOA’s insurance, Travelers, agreed to cover repairs. But -- according to paperwork she showed Action 9 – it was roughly $23,000, less than half what she says she and her husband need.

“We did the right thing, you know ... we pay every month. We don’t miss any payment. But they don’t do what they’re supposed to do,” she said.

She says they’ve been waiting more than 16 months to get their home back the way it was and that they have no choice but to live there in the meantime.

“Exhausted. You know we’re tired,” she said. “It’s awful the way we’re feeling … very frustrating. Why don’t they fix our house?”

They have both a lawyer and a public adjuster, Ramon Melo, helping them.

“No contractor will do the work for the price they are paying for it,” Melo said. He believes Travelers is not paying enough, but that the HOA should be asserting itself more.

Action 9 emailed and texted the HOA. They didn’t respond in time for this report. Travelers did respond but didn’t provide any official statement, and it’s been close to a month.
