ANDERSON, S.C. — Anderson School District 5 has asked a private security guard not to return after a fifth grader was able to pull the officer's gun out of its holster.
The guard works for the same company that will take over security at local schools next year.
District defends replacing deputies with private security at schools
District spokesman Kyle Newton told media outlets that the guard was sitting on a bench Monday with a student on either side at Varennes Elementary School when one of the students was able to take the gun out of the officer's holster.
Authorities say the gun was not fired and was only free for about 10 seconds.
The guard worked for Defender Services, a private company that helps provide security officers for schools. His name was not released.
The same company will provide security for Chester County schools next year.

The Chester County Sheriff is upset the county is replacing his deputie, claiming it risks students' safety.
Channel 9 asked Anderson County officials if they've had any other issues with Defender security guards. They said this is the first school year using the company and that this is the first problem they've had.
School officials say the student is also being disciplined.
