CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Violence broke out Thursday night in west Charlotte during a march to put an end to violence.
The march for peace was meant to honor Daveon Antonio Andrews, the victim of Charlotte's latest homicide.
Family members celebrated Daveon's life, even as the vigil turned into what they are trying to prevent.
“I need justice,” his grandmother Gwendolyn Andrews said. “I need him to come forward because he killed my baby.”
Andrews was shot and killed Monday night on Oregon Street, the city's fourth homicide of Memorial Day weekend.
Dream Team for Peace marched until a senseless fight broke out.
Their prayers for Andrews were louder than the hatred.
Shelton Morris, the group's organizer and Andrew's uncle, hopes the future is as bright as the candles they raised.
“Please stop the violence,” Morris said. “Stop, stop. Put down those guns, stop fighting. Just love, man. Just love."
Family members believe Morris was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Police have not identified any suspects.
No arrests have been made.
