TRACKING: Several local counties under Flash Flood Warning as storm drenches area

  • A Flash Flood Warning is in place for Ashe, Avery, Burke and Caldwell counties until 3 a.m. Wednesday. There is also a Flash Flood Warning in effect for Burke County until 1 a.m. and Catawba County until 4:15 a.m.
  • Avery County schools are closed Wednesday due to the severe storms. School officials said bridges and numerous roadways across the county were covered by water.
  • In Avery County just before 9 p.m., officials confirmed that three campgrounds, a portion of Linville Land Harbor and some homes near the Mitchell County line were being evacuated because of high water.
  • Storms prompted several tornado warnings Tuesday.
  • According to the National Weather Service, at 11:49 a.m. a confirmed tornado was located 7 miles east of Taylorsville, moving north at 15 mph. Emergency management officials confirmed a tornado was on the ground.
  • In Iredell County, radar-indicated rotation was spotted. At 12:36 p.m., emergency management officials confirmed a tornado was located 14 miles north of Statesville, about 4 miles northwest of Harmony, moving north at 25 mph.
  • Witnesses say the storm came up Old Mountain Road from Iredell County, toward Hiddenite, causing some damage.
  • No injuries have been reported so far.
  • All of the wet weather will clear out by early Wednesday morning.
  • Wednesday afternoon will be hot and humid with temps in the 90s.
