CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A detention officer with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office was arrested and charged with embezzlement by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The Sheriff’s Office found out that Jason Kersey had been allegedly using his county-issued procurement card to make hundreds of dollars in unauthorized purchases.

The card had been issued for travel-related expenses for training.

Kersey had been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2014 and was assigned to Jail Central.

There was an internal investigation, which led the Sheriff’s Office to contact CMPD.

Kersey was terminated, effective immediately.

“I take these charges very seriously. Unethical behavior will not be tolerated,” Sheriff Irwin Carmichael said. "MCSO is working with CMPD as they continue their investigation. At this time, we do not have anything further to add.”
