Girl, 12, tells police she was raped in middle school bathroom

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police spent part of Thursday night interviewing a 12-year-old girl who reported she had been raped inside a middle school bathroom.

She told officers she was attacked this week by another student.

Several school board members said they are just learning about the incident and are now waiting for police confirmation that the girl’s story is true.

The investigation started around noon Thursday when the girl told CMPD officers she was raped inside a bathroom at J.T. Williams Middle School in north Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon.

Sumorcon Little said she hopes the story turns out to be untrue.

“This is supposed to be a safe haven. This is supposed to be a place where a child can come to be free and be themselves,” she said.

Police only said that the girl’s story is part of an active investigation.

Police said investigators are still working to confirm the details of the girl’s story before proceeding.

Several school leaders described J.T. Williams Middle School as an alternative school, adding that plenty of security is on hand to protect the children during the day.
