CHARLOTTE — Charlotte’s venerable Quail Hollow Club has climbed two spots on an annual ranking of the best golf courses in North Carolina. The 72-par course in south Charlotte lands at No. 5 on the April 2022 ranking from the N.C. Golf Panel, up from No. 7 a year ago.

Quail Hollow is the local region’s top-ranked course, as determined by the panel’s membership. Normally at this time of year, the club would be gearing up to host the Wells Fargo Championship, but that annual PGA Tour event is headed to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., this spring. That’s because preparations are underway at Quail Hollow for the tour’s Presidents Cup, which is set to be played here in September.
A dozen other courses around the region made the list, but — with one exception — they all slipped in the ranking from the previous year. The Club at Longview in Waxhaw, at No. 46, wasn’t ranked in 2021.
