Golf tournament honors CMPD officers killed 33 years ago

A group of CMPD officers keeps showing up for their fallen comrades 33 years later.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers John Burnette and Anthony “Andy” Nobles were shot and killed in the line of duty 33 years ago today, on Oct. 5, 1993.

The 30th annual golf tournament honoring their lives was held Monday at Highland Creek Golf Club in Charlotte.

Retired CMPD Sgt. David Scheppegrell said the tournament continues to be a success.

“The golf tournament continues to be a success,” he said. “This year sold out in 22 hours. There’s such a demand to play in the tournament. We’re lucky to have so many police officers and sponsors. Some of them play in the tournament every year.”

Proceeds from the tournament support the Burnette-Nobles Fund, which supports the community, youth, and law enforcement.
