MATTHEWS, N.C. — Habitat for Humanity volunteers in Matthews say people have been using their dumpster while they’re away from the construction site.
Surveillance photos captured people driving up and using the dumpster seven times between mid-March and this week without authorization.
Habitat for Humanity says one person left a stack of old cabinets.
Kristen Fuller with Greater Matthews Habitat for Humanity told Channel 9’s Eli Brand that frustration is building up.
“We have seen sinks, we have seen just bags of trash. Bedding, mattresses,” she said. “Every dollar that we have to spend to empty the dumpster could have been spent towards construction.”
The nonprofit has been around since 1989 and has built nearly 120 homes for families in need. The organization has added security to the site. Fuller hopes to open up homes to families in a couple of months but needs community cooperation to do so.
Donor money and volunteer time will have to be used to empty the dumpster. Matthews Police also say they’ve added patrols in the area.
