CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The community’s generous donations are already helping to put books in the hands of children as part of our TV64 "64U Books for Kids" collection drive.

Volunteers from Hands On Charlotte were at the main library uptown Thursday afternoon helping to sort the donated books that have already come in.

“Literacy is such a vital piece of helping out our community, especially kids in low-resource situations,” Bob Young, with Hands On Charlotte, said. “The more books they can have on hand, the more they can have access to, the more likely they are to be able to stay at grade level for reading. That has repercussions all throughout their lifetime.”

We'll be collecting new and gently used books for children from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

There will be a special collection day on Wednesday at WSOC-TV, located at 1901 N. Tyron St.
