CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nearly two years ago, a tackle on the football field came close to paralyzing John Balas.

The Providence High School junior suffered a broken neck and fractured vertebrae.

>> In the video at the top of this page, Channel 9 anchor Damany Lewis talks to Balas and learns how the pandemic gave him time to heal and train.

Now, he’s fully recovered and back on the field inspiring his teammates. Head coach Wes Ward says he’s exceeding expectations, too.

“He is walking motivation,” Ward said. “The kids love him, and love that he is back out here.”
