High-speed chase ends in dramatic crash in Plaza-Midwood

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police chased a red SUV through multiple counties Friday afternoon.

North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said the chase started in Gaston County on Interstate 85 near mile marker 26.

A trooper stopped the vehicle for multiple felony warrants for someone in the SUV.

The driver took off and led troopers on a chase, exiting onto U.S. 74 into Mecklenburg County.

Troopers said the driver reached speeds of 100 mph.

Chopper 9 followed the high-speed chase through north Charlotte into the Plaza-Midwood area.

Police said the driver ran stop signs, stop lights, made several illegal turns and even drove on the sidewalk to get around a car.

The SUV crashed into a power pole on Central Avenue.

The driver and a passenger jumped out and ran near the area of a Harris Teeter store.

Chopper 9 video shows one man run across the street towards the Harris Teeter.

Another driver, Martha Chinnis, had power lines fall on top of her car.

"I was in my car for a little bit because I was pretty shaken up. I didn't know what was going to happen. I thought something was going to fall on me," Chinnis said.

Channel 9 cameras were on the ground as police placed the passenger of the SUV, Antwaun Devont Oliphant, 25, into the back of a police car.

Police said Oliphant was wanted on two counts of larceny of motor vehicle parts, possession of a stolen vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, felony conspiracy, driving while license revoked and larceny.

Witnesses in the middle of the chase said they are lucky it wasn't worse.

"Just kind of insane right now, I don't know," said one witness.

Channel 9 interviewed another witness who said they watched as the SUV crashed into another car in north Charlotte.
