CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was seriously hurt when someone crashed into her in a construction zone Tuesday morning.

Highway 16 was temporarily closed in both directions just south of Newton. It has since reopened.

It started around 9 a.m. near the Food Lion in Newton. Troopers say a woman was stopped for a flagger at the construction site when a pickup truck slammed into the back of her car, spinning her into the northbound lane. That’s when troopers say she was struck a second time by an SUV that was heading north.

First responders told Channel 9’s Dave Faherty that a woman was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

In total, five vehicles were involved. At the time of the crash, the road was down to one lane as an NCDOT subcontractor was working to clear trees along the roadway. Thankfully, none of the workers were hurt in the crash.

Channel 9 is asking for an update on the woman’s condition.
