KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Renovations to the historic Gem Theatre might seem like an afterthought in Kannapolis’ downtown revitalization with a $52 million ballpark and significant private investment in hand. But local leaders say the improvements to the downtown landmark are critical to big-picture success for the city.

Last week, the first phase of renovations to the Gem Theatre began. The movie theater, which first opened in downtown Kannapolis in the 1930s, will close until the improvements are complete.
