CHARLOTTE — Downed power lines on an east Charlotte road forced drivers to find alternate routes Monday morning as many headed back to work for the first time after Thanksgiving.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police had shut down Albemarle Road in both directions at about 5 a.m. A Channel 9 crew at the scene saw power lines down in the roadway near a gas station and a traffic light outage at the intersection of Albemarle Road and Farm Pond Lane.
According to CMPD’s traffic website, the crash was a hit and run that happened just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday. NDCOT officials estimated the road would reopen just after noon.
Law enforcement responded to another car that crashed into a power pole in northwest Charlotte at about 4:30 a.m. The crash happened on inbound Brookshire Boulevard at Oakdale Road.
Channel 9 crews could see the pole which appeared to be broken but still standing.
According to Mecklenburg EMS, nobody was hurt in either crash.
As of 5:30 a.m., Duke Energy’s outage map did not show any power outages in the area of either crash.
Channel 9 is checking to see how long Albemarle Road will remain closed.
Just before 2 a.m. Monday, first responders shut down Interstate 77 south near the Carowinds exit for a four-car crash. The Flint fire chief told Channel 9 one of the cars involved in the crash was going the wrong way.
The chief said crew cut the wrong-way driver out of the car but they refused to go to the hospital. The chief also said nobody else was seriously hurt.
The road has since reopened.
