CHARLOTTE, N.C. — About 600 volunteers from the Charlotte Hornets and Bank of America were supporting six nonprofits Wednesday in Charlotte. It was part of the annual day of service.

It was the first year for head coach James Borrego. He was rolling a cart of donated clothes at the Crisis Assistance Ministry. He said he relates to the families who need them.
“I grew up in a single parent family," Borrego said. "Mom worked two or three jobs just like these people today, you know, been without power, looking for the next meal."
Local nonprofits accepting volunteers:
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Carolinas
- Camino Community Center
- Dress for Success Charlotte
- Friendship Trays
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina
Borrego was volunteering with his three kids, and wife were there too helping fold clothes. Families come here to get help when facing eviction and risk losing power.
“To see a look on somebody's face there's nothing like that. and to reach out a hand give you a hand. I want my kids to see that. I want to be about that for the city, for this organization,” said Borrego.
Everything that is donated does into the store at Crisis Assistance Ministry. It’s where families in our community get items for free. The store has everything from clothes to kitchen supplies.
“If we help one, two, three families today, that means a big deal. Because, like I said before, I’ve been there. And when young people see my story, I want people to take hope in that,” said Borrego.
Volunteers also went to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte, Camino Community Center, Dress for Success, Friendship Trays and Second Harvest Food Bank.
