CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Atrium Health’s Levine Children’s Hospital is using new robotic technology to enhance care for its young patients.
The robot, Gita (pronounced jee-tah), is programmed to follow humans and carry about 40 pounds of cargo. It was created by Piaggio Fast Forward, part of the Italian company best known for its Vespa scooter. The robot has often been used in airports for food delivery, said Meredith Dean, manager of the hospital’s Seacrest Studios, a media center sponsored by the Ryan Seacrest Foundation.

Levine Children’s is the first hospital in the nation to use the Gita robot, Dean said. The hospital has three — a blue one named Harry, a red one named Ron and a gray one named Hermione.
