CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The IRS is rushing to send out the second round of stimulus payments, but for some, the money is being deposited into the wrong bank account.

When the first stimulus payments went out, Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke was contacted by viewers who were having problems getting their money. Payments were deposited into their tax preparer’s bank account instead of their personal accounts.

“I’m angry and frustrated, but … I feel like a lot of people do,” TurboTax customer Danielle Coleman told Action 9. “I feel left behind and not taken care of. I’ve been working through the pandemic since March and taking care of other people and I’ve gotten COVID myself and I don’t feel any economic relief.”

Now, customers of H&R Block and TurboTax are experiencing the same frustrations with the second stimulus payments.

These two companies, like a lot of tax preparers, set up special bank accounts to give customers tax refunds in advance, so the IRS has those accounts on file instead of the customers’ regular personal accounts.

Both companies stated they are working to get the money to their customers.

H&R Block told Action 9 that it is processing “millions of stimulus payments.”

The company posted to Facebook: “Don’t worry – we have sent these payments on to the method you chose for refund transfer: direct deposit, check or emerald card.”

TurboTax posted to Facebook that it is “working tirelessly on a solution with the treasury and the IRS.”

The company stated the error will be corrected within days and that stimulus payments will begin being deposited into the correct bank accounts.
