Hundreds attend vigil for slain teen, security at schools increase

Charlotte, N.C. — A rash of threats on social media has prompted at least one Charlotte school to have extra security on Friday.

The threats stemmed from a homicide where a Vance High School student was fatally shot at a birthday party on Saturday.

John "Jon-Jon" Kempson, 17, was shot and killed after an argument broke out at the party at Cedar Knoll Apartments Saturday night.

Investigators said 18-year-old Terry Sekyere got into a fight with Kempson, but it was 19-year-old Armani Compton McDonald who shot and killed Kempson.

Police will be patrolling Myers Park High School and four other high schools because of threats found on social media.

Police attended a vigil for Kempson on Thursday night.

The vigil was held by the group Mothers of Murdered Offspring, and more than 500 people were there.

Police said there were no problems at the vigil despite threats, but those who attended said this incident affects the whole community.

"If they learn anything, it's to take this negative and turn it into a positive," said Kempson's older sister, Latisha Drummer. "They just don't realize the impact you have when you kill someone."

"You think life is just something you can snuff out because you got into an argument? This is foolishness," said Judy Williams with Mothers of Murdered Offspring.

Williams and about a dozen other speakers asked the mourners to steer clear of gangs and to learn from Kempson's death.

Earlier this week, there were extra officers at Vance, West Mecklenburg, West Charlotte and Harding high schools as well because of threats online.
