GASTONIA, N.C. — Charges against a local woman accused of trying to hire someone to kill her husband have been dropped.

The district attorney said they couldn't prove Jessica Philbeck had the money to pay for having her husband killed, so with that lack of proof, the charges were dropped.

Police said the man Philbeck asked to do the killing was originally hired to do work on her home in Gastonia.

He said he went straight to police after Philbeck made the offer.

He said he's concerned about his safety.

"If she is not innocent, then what did y'all file a murder charge against my wife?" Thomas Grant said about the charges. "I feel like I can't trust her. I can't trust the law. I can't trust people at the courthouse and I need some answers."
