Police make arrest day after man’s body found in SUV on I-77 in Cornelius

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Police arrested and charged Rymyr Davaughn Quarles, 22, of Mooresville, on Friday with the murder of a man who was found dead in an SUV Thursday on Interstate 77 in Cornelius.

Earlier, police asked for the public’s help to find a vehicle in connection with 34-year-old Brandon David Hedrick’s death.

MEDIC said Hedrick was pronounced dead at the scene. Cornelius police said he had been shot.

Officials told Channel 9 that a trooper pulled over to help what appeared to be a stranded motorist in the left toll lane on I-77, between Westmoreland Road and Sam Furr Road.

When the trooper approached the vehicle on Thursday, he found the driver, Hedrick, unresponsive.

No other details about the crime, including motive, have been released.

Police later released images of a vehicle that may have been involved in Hedrick’s death. Investigators said the vehicle was possibly a white Ford Econoline passenger van.

Cornelius police are asking anyone that may have been traveling I-77 southbound around 6:10 a.m. and has information about the case to please contact Captain Thompson with the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773.

The southbound toll lanes of I-77 were shut down between Exit 28 and mile marker 26, just north of Sam Furr Road as police investigated. Those lanes were eventually reopened before 11 a.m.

Huntersville police, Cornelius police and the Highway Patrol were all assisting with the investigation.
