CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman was killed and her 3-year-old son was taken to the hospital after a drunk driver crashed into their car in northeast Charlotte on Tuesday, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to Reagan Drive at Ventura Way Drive just after 6 p.m., where they found two cars with serious damage.

Police said Malonda Caldron was stopped in the westbound lane of Reagan Drive waiting to turn left onto Ventura Way Drive. Anthony Ebron Jr., 62, was speeding in a Honda heading west on Reagan Drive when he slammed into the back of Caldron’s car, officers said.

Malonda Caldron, 44, was driving a Ford and had her son in the car with her, officers said. They were going to the home of Caldron’s mother, Brenda Caldron.

“They had to cut her out of the car,” Brenda Caldron said. “While they were cutting her out of the car, her heart stopped.”

MEDIC rushed Malonda Caldron to the hospital, but she did not survive. Her son was also taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK, authorities said.

“She was so beautiful,” friend Cortez Eberhart said.

Ebron was drunk at the time of the crash, police said. His license was already suspended from driving while impaired on Nov. 4.

After he was treated for his injuries, Ebron was arrested and charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving while license revoked for impaired driving, possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

“I’ve got to live with this for the rest of my life,” Brenda Caldron told Channel 9. “We have a 3-year-old boy that doesn’t have a mother anymore. He’ll never have a mother.”
