INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — Indian Trail town council members squared off Tuesday with Mayor Michael Alvarez over comments he made about being threatened by a deputy.
A viewer sent Eyewitness News cell phone video of the comments made by councilwoman Darlene Luther, who appears to be calling for some sort of resignation.
The comments come in the wake of months of controversy over the town's contract with the Union County Sheriff's Office.
At a vote in February on whether to continue the contract, Alvarez initially sided with Luther and Allen against it. He then changed his mind at the last minute and voted to keep the contract, casting the tie-breaking vote.
He later told residents he had been threatened by Lt. Chase Coble during the meeting. Several weeks after that, Alvarez retracted his statements about the alleged threat and admitted he had lied.
Although the town council has formally censured Alvarez for his statements, Luther went a step forward at Tuesday's meeting, apparently accusing Alvarez of "lying to a federal agent," on the video, though it is unclear who that federal agent may be or what investigation she is referring to.
