Interstate 77 shut down several hours near Statesville after car crash

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Interstate 77 northbound was shut down Sunday morning near Statesville after a car crash, according to a TIMS alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The accident happened around 9:38 a.m. around mile marker 49 near U.S. 70.

Both lanes were shut down for about an hour.

The accident was cleared around 11 a.m., but congestion remained for another hour or so.

The left lane reopened around 10:50 a.m. while the right lane remained closed.

Our Channel 9 crew at the scene said they were stuck in traffic near mile marker 42 for quite some time before reaching the scene of the crash.

We are asking North Carolina State Highway Patrol for details on the crash and what led to it.
