Pickup truck driver involved in hit-and-run that killed bicyclist turns himself in

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers said the driver of a pickup truck involved in a hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist in Iredell County turned himself in on Monday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said 30-year-old Matthew Franklin Redden was riding his bike east on U.S. 64 near Barry Oak Road around 8:50 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day when a Dodge Ram truck hit him from behind.

Redden died at the scene. Troopers said he was dressed in dark clothing and was not wearing a helmet.

Redden was thrown from his bike and knocked into the opposite lane, where he was hit by a GMC sport utility vehicle, according to troopers. Investigators said the driver of the GMC stopped but the driver of the truck kept going.

Investigators said they were searching for a 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram lifted pickup truck with a loud exhaust.

They said the driver has since turned himself in and the truck has been located.

The investigation is ongoing and no other details were released.
