IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Police say former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield broke into and stole equipment from two race teams.
Mayfield turned himself in to authorities in Iredell County on Wednesday after being indicted on 10 counts of breaking and entering and larceny at Red Bull Racing and Fitz Motorsports.
Mooresville Police Major Bryan Anderson said his department began investigating Mayfield after detectives in Catawba County said they found stolen equipment inside Mayfield's home.
"Property that was located there was found to have been stolen here in Mooresville," Anderson said.
Earlier this month, Mooresville police detectives testified in front of a grand jury that Mayfield broke into trailers at Red Bull Racing and a building operated by Fitz Motorsports in late 2010. The grand jury indicted Mayfield, who was served with the indictment Wednesday.
Court officials said Mayfield turned himself in at the Iredell County Jail in Statesville, where he was booked. Mayfield was freed on $5,000 bond a short time later.
