IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A teacher was accused of sexual activity with a student, according to Iredell County Sheriff's Office.

Julianna Ortiz Mills, 37, a teacher at South Iredell High School, was found by a deputy with a male student at the same school parked at the dead end road of an undeveloped residential area, deputies said.

Mills resigned her position effective Friday, said officials with Iredell-Statesville Schools.

The student was later interviewed at the Dove House Children's Advocacy Center.

Mills, of Mooresville, was charged with one count of sexual activity with a student by a teacher, and one count of felony taking indecent liberties with a student by a teacher, deputies said.

The crimes occurred at locations in Iredell County; however, no crimes occurred on school property, deputies said.

The student is over the age of 16; however, North Carolina law makes it a felony for teachers and other school personnel to have a sexual relationship with a student at the same school, no matter the age of the student.

Mills was arrested and was placed under a $10,000 secured bond.

Mills was hired by Iredell-Statesville Schools in August of 2013 serving as an English teacher at South Iredell High School.
