CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Suppose you own a professional soccer team one level below Major League Soccer. Then suppose that your city lands an MLS team, bringing a higher-profile, more popular and lucrative league into your backyard.
That’s what happened in December when David Tepper agreed to pay a record expansion fee of $325 million to put the 30th MLS club in Charlotte. And it’s happened in St. Louis, where, this week, news surfaced that the USL Championship club will disband at the end of this season.

Jim McPhilliamy, managing partner of the Charlotte Independence, told CBJ on Wednesday that the USL Championship club remains committed to moving to American Legion Memorial Stadium on the edge of uptown next year. That move will put the Independence closer to the new MLS team, which will debut in March 2022 at Bank of America Stadium in uptown.
