‘It’s hard’: Mom raises awareness after son dies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

CHARLOTTE — A woman said she lost her son to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and shared her story with Channel 9 to raise awareness about the condition.

“He was definitely going to have a personality,” mother Neidra Chubb said. “He was so bubbly. He would laugh all the time.”

“Junior” was alive for only a few months. He died in 2018 from the sudden and silent condition.

“I mean, that’s my firstborn,” she told reporter DaShawn Brown. “That’s my baby. It’s hard. I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.”

SIDS is the most common cause of death for infants, according to the National Institutes of Health.

SIDS is often related to sleep.

Risk factors include infants sleeping on their stomachs, on soft surfaces or on or under loose bedding.

“Putting them on their back is the safest position for them,” said Dr. Sumon Bhomick, who is with Novant Health and a pediatrician at Waverly Pediatrics. “I use this little antidote. ‘Keep it safe and separate, because we don’t want a lot of fluffy pillows and bumpers or anything like that in the crib, sleeping space when the infants are actually sleeping,”
