CHARLOTTE — A local man is on a mission to elevate the art of jazz in Charlotte.

Ocie Davis produced the series, “Jazz at the Gantt,” which brings artists from New York to the Queen City.

“Not only do we have rising jazz stars, we also have components of Black history, Black culture, and of course, Black music,” Davis said. “And we combine all of this into a presentation.”

Davis is behind the live performances that showcase young, minority artists carrying the torch of the African American art form.

He said that anyone who thinks jazz is dying has it all wrong.

The Camille Thurman Quintet performs next on Feb. 24 at the Harvey B. Gantt Center in Uptown Charlotte.
