CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the race to vaccinate, nearly 50% of adults have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. In the 65 and older population, it jumps to 78%.
Officials said this is great progress and it has allowed restrictions at some nursing facilities to be ease, but it hasn’t been the same for everyone.

“I cry when I talk about it,” White said. “It’s just heartbreaking because I’m a family nurse practitioner and feel like I can’t even take care of my own mom.”
Twelve years ago, Mary Beth White’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. In December, when the COVID crisis was at its worst, White and her brothers moved their mother into White Oak Manor in Charlotte.
Since then, she’s been able to visit her mother on the front porch. But when a staffer tested positive, the facility went into lockdown and all visits were canceled.
