CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The officer-involved shooting that led to some of Charlotte's darkest days inspired a song by a world-famous musician.
Pharrell released “Don’t, Don’t Do it” on Wednesday.
The song is based on the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott in northeast Charlotte in September of 2016.
Lyrics:
"We were going home,
Waiting for the kids,
School bus to arrive,
They're gonna do it anyway,
Reaching for your keys,
Wait, is that your phone?
Got a TBI."
TBI is the traumatic brain injury that family members said Scott suffered that may have impaired his judgment before he was shot by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer.
The title, “Don’t, Don’t Do it” comes from the cellphone video recorded by Scott's wife who yelled to her husband before the shooting.
That shooting led to days of violence and protests in Charlotte that ended after the National Guard came in.
Officer Brentley Vinson was cleared in the shooting by the district attorney's office.
Scott was holding a gun.
The Citizens Review Board has since recommended more de-escalation training for Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers.
